*Do you know what a DNS Sinkhole is?

Suggested page: What is a DNS Sinkhole and how to set it up?

A DNS sinkhole is a DNS-based security technique that prevents users and devices from reaching selected dangerous or unwanted domains. When a blocked domain is requested, the DNS resolver replaces the legitimate answer with a controlled response, stopping the connection before the destination's real IP address reaches the client.

DNS sinkholes are normally deployed on recursive DNS resolvers rather than authoritative DNS servers. This allows organizations to check client queries against security policies and block suspicious destinations at an early stage.

Several open-source DNS solutions support sinkholing. BIND 9 can use Response Policy Zones (RPZ), which are particularly useful for larger environments or policies shared between multiple resolvers. Unbound supports simple local-zone rules as well as RPZ, while dnsmasq offers a lightweight option for smaller networks.

A successful deployment should cover both IPv4 and IPv6, restrict recursive DNS access to trusted networks, log blocked queries, and regularly review blocklists. Organizations should also maintain an allowlist to reduce false positives and test configuration changes before applying them in production.
